Rock Gardens: Your Next Favorite Landscaping Element

April 17, 2024

Hello and welcome back to the Mountainscapers blog! Living in Arizona has its perks and difficulties that affect your Phoenix landscaping designs. Between the intense heat and dry climate, it can take a lot of work to keep up a traditional garden. What if, instead of planting a traditional garden, you installed a rock garden?

What is a Rock Garden?

A rock garden is a plot of land that features rocks as the main decorative element. There are many types of rock gardens. Some rock gardens feature more rocks than plants, some feature multiple colors or types of rocks, and some are accented with succulents or flowers. The design options available with rock gardens are endless!

Why Install a Rock Garden?

Rock gardens can offer many benefits; the first two benefits, and arguably the most important benefits, are water conservation and the lowered need for maintenance. The Arizona heat can easily annihilate heat-sensitive plants and make it nearly impossible to maintain a garden without a lot of attention and care. When you install a rock garden, it will require less maintenance and considerably less water, or no water at all, depending if you include plants in your rock garden design.

How to Install a Rock Garden

The first place to start when you are installing a rock garden is to pick the type of rocks or shape of your design. The bigger the rocks that you choose, the more the rocks will dictate the shape of your rock garden. Also, be mindful of all the colors of rocks available. Once you do that, if you desire plants in your rock garden, choose those that work well with rocks. Succulents are tried and true decorative elements that take little maintenance and can handle the extreme temperature effortlessly. There isn’t a wrong way to create a rock garden — enjoy all the possibilities!
